GimpShop
I was on my way to work on the van and a friend of mine was sitting near me reading the manual for PaintShop which he had just purchased because photoshop was too expensive. I had asked him if he had used GimpShop? He said he had used gimp and found it hard to use as all the features were hard to get at. He was not used to the menus/toolbars . I suggested he try GimpShop which is gimp but with a PhotoShop look and feel.
Gimpshop is open source and has additional plug-ins and resources on line. It also runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Not everyone loves gimpshop but I would highly recommend trying it before paying for another program – Hey – it is free!
You can download gimpshop from http://www.gimpshop.com/

The question is also whether the memory usage is better than in Gimp.
I had several problems working with Gimp. Firstly having to rename two DLLs in my System32 folder never really appealed to me. Secondly the GUI – but you can get used to that – and thirdly I found that if I opened several iamges at once to edit then I quickly ran out of resources.

You should try the latest version. Gimp and GimpShop have come a long long way.
