VLC for all your media playback needs
Recently, a friend asked me what he should install on a new PC before he takes a backup snapshot. The PC is going to be used by the whole family as a media PC in addition to other functions. I put VLC Media Player on this list of must haves.
VLC is a feature rich media players that plays EVERYTHING. No matter what type of file I have thrown at VLC it has handled it without an issue. VLC does not require the installation of additional codecs. It plays most every file immediately after installation. VLC is also skinable so you can customize the way VLC looks.
VLC media Player is a free and open source cross platform (Windows/Mac/Linux) media player. I highly recommend it.
You can grab VLC from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

There are two things that I don’t like about VLC:
1) The window does not take the foreground when a new clip starts (and to my knowledge there is no setting to correct this), and
2) It buffers like WMP instead of downloading the whole clip before beginning playback.

Hi Noah,
I am not sure about the foreground issue. It seems more OS related. I am looking into it.
Regarding the second issue – Are you referring to local media or streaming content?

Streaming content.
